Off-Road “auxillary” lighting is an essential tool for completing your off-road experience.  Even if you don’t have plans for any night off-roading, there is a chance you could get caught out after dark.  I personally love off-roading at night.  It is another level of challenging, and it can be extra fun with a good group of friends and family.

Before getting into the specifics of each type of light, it is important to understand the terrain you plan on off-roading in.  Each will need a different set-up depending on certain variables.

  • Forest Trails are generally tackled at slower speeds and have tight turns and tight trails.  

Bumper Lights to add power to the forward facing traditional headlights would be ideal.  Ditch Lights are needed for those tight turns and watching the edges.  Flood Lights are a good addition for extra visibility and are perfect for use when getting to camp.

  • Dunes or Desert will have higher speeds, more wide-open off-roading and more dust.  A Chase Light mounted on the back would be a must for safety from those coming up from behind.  An Overhead Light Bar adds depth and distance to your visibility, this is valuable for the faster speeds.  Ditch Lights help with those quick turns especially as you crest a dune.
  • Rock Crawling of course slower speeds, with a ton of angles as you are off camber a lot.  Bumper Lights flooding more of the area in front help eliminate some of the shadows created by the rocky terrain helping to get a clearer picture of the upcoming obstacles.  Rock Lights mounted inside each wheel well illuminate the obstacles all around the tires which is invaluable when rock crawling at night.  Another light that some overlook would be Rear Pod Lights.  Often when rock crawling you will have to back up to take a different line, so they can come in handy especially for your spotter.

Now depending on your situation, here is some general information on picking out the perfect Auxillary Off-Road Lights for your vehicle.  

For optimal results, you should opt for high quality LED lighting.  LED technology offers durability, energy efficiency, and superior brightness, which is indispensable for off-road navigation.  


Spotlights provide precise visibility in challenging terrains, such as narrow trails where the standard vehicle lights may not suffice. When venturing into such areas, pinpointing the exact location and intensity needed for your lights is crucial. Begin this process by thoroughly identifying the specific spots along the trail that require enhanced lighting. Laser Spotlights

Ditch Light Floodlight (Pod Light)

The lateral installation of additional floodlights (sometimes called ditch lights) can further widen the light coverage, eliminating blind spots and ensuring 180-degree illumination around your vehicle. Light Bar

When considering where to add pod lights to your vehicle, start by reviewing areas that may have limited visibility. Common mounting points include bumpers, roof racks, and A-pillars (on hood next to exterior rear view mirrors). Determine the best location by assessing where additional lighting is needed. For instance, if you’re encountering frequent blind spots on twisty trails, mounting pod lights on your A-pillars can provide the necessary side illumination to navigate safely.

Pod Lights (can be placed anywhere)

We recommend utilizing compact LED pod lights for their flexibility in installation. Their small size doesn’t take up much space, which is particularly beneficial if you’re looking to maintain the vehicle’s aerodynamics or avoid adding significant weight. Plus, their flexibility in direction means you can adjust the light beam exactly where it’s needed—be it angled downward for challenging terrain or to the sides to capture wider visibility.

One of the key advantages of pod lights is their directional adjustment capability. Unlike fixed lights, you can reposition pod lights to address your immediate lighting needs, which is invaluable during unpredictable off-road adventures. Whether you’re climbing rocky hills or navigating through dense brush, the ability to direct light precisely is a major benefit.

Rock Lights

Rock Lights provide essential low-ground illumination for off-road enthusiasts engaging in activities, especially rock crawling. To ensure safety and enhance your ability to navigate through tricky terrain, installing rock lights is crucial for identifying obstacles under your vehicle and assisting with precise tire placement.

Begin by closely examining the areas under your vehicle that need extra visibility. Be mindful of regions where the shadows are heaviest and natural light fails to reach. As for me and my Bronco, I off-road in a variety of terrain.  However, most of my off-roading is here in the east USA.  Where the terrain, in most cases, is tight and through forest.  We do have areas where higher speeds are available.  So, I have chosen all the lights named above except for the rock lights as I don’t do a lot of rock crawling especially at night.  I chose Code 4 LED lights (choosing high quality lights is important for your set-up).  I have placed them in a manner where I have a 180 degree sight range around the front of my Bronco.  I also have a couple pod lights mounted in the rear bumper.
